When I first saw this anime, I really wondered how Japanese can dream and forecast the future from 1989. The anime comprises of many aspects and details which, in my opinion, can be realized. Not only those but also the philosophy and moral of what humankind is called when we can surpass Darwin's Theory of Evolution. This is because, today, we are moving closer and closer to its boundary by our technology and science.

I have just watched TED talk from Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The talk is about his films on humanity and our habitat. The latter is quite interesting for me. It is called "HOME."

HOME is free for everyone and will be available on-line on Jun 5th,2009. The movie concerns our planet regarding recent human activities. Leading Method in This Modern Age

In this age (also in Thailand), we require this method in order to make a change since hierarchical movement in Thai society may not be quite efficient. I really like this talk. It is not only about the science and art but it is also about the future of humankind. There are many points and inspirations in the talk. It also reassures my mind on the real science and art. In fact, I have started to feel what she talked after my master's graduation.

With the science, I have analysis.
With the art, I have creativity.
Thus, nowadays, I appreciate both science and art equally because, in my opinion, we need to have both in order to complete an absolutely neat idea. I experienced this concept while I was working with my master thesis. Some time we may think that something is the production of either science or art. Nonetheless, if we think of it carefully, it was the combination of science and art: a creativity in an analysis, an analysis in a creativity. :)

The Stories on Human Rights

Last Monday (May 4th), I had been to FCCT, The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand, in order to attend film displays which are 22 short films about stories on Human Rights. The event was organized to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

The films were produced from various film makers around the world and categorized into six themes: culture, development, dignity and justice, environment, gender, and participation. Some films locally reflect the rights based on country, so they may not be able to understand easily. However, many of them are globally understandable.

I went to the place on time, but front seats were sat, so my sat in the back. The location was not appropriate to watch the screen. Since many films use local Language, I could not read their subtitles. Nevertheless the atmosphere was good and I enjoy the screening. The event also provided one glass of wine for each attendance. :)

ECTI-CON 2009

Last Thursday, I had been to ECTI international conference to give one presentation of my paper, Joint Flow Control, Routing, and Medium Access Control in Random Access Multi-Hop Wireless Networks with Time Varying Link Capacities. On the way to the event, I went with my adviser and my SriLanka friend, Dr. Poompat and Buddhika. We arrived at the conference around 10am. After an anxious lunch, I had escaped away for a last-minute practice. Then, at 2:20pm, I presented my paper with presentation slides.

Totally, I had only 20 minutes for both speaking and Q&A. The presentation did not go well at the beginning. Many people could notice my anxiety and shaking voice. After some slides, in the middle of the presentation, my consciousness came back to me, and I could focus. As a result, the presentation went well from then. I used approximately 15 minutes for speaking. The 5-minute Q&A was ok. There were three questions asked from audiences and the session chair, Dr. Chaodit. The first two questions were answered properly. However, the answer of last question from the chair did not satisfy me. Actually, the question was one of things to be considered in this work. At that time, I felt too stressed; therefore, even I had an explanation, I did not give reasons, but just went straight to an answer without providing details. Anyway, it was a good experience for me, and the question was good.

All presentation on the day finished about 6pm. We went to change our cloth to ECTI's provided T-shirt, looked like the one for beach. The dinner started at 6.30pm. Beside the food which was OK, there was another excitement announce from a stage that my paper received the best paper award. Well, it was the first time for me that I attended to a conference and got the best paper award. I could not tell how excitement it was. :) I received the award from Prof. Prabhas Chongstitvattana.

The day after, my friend, Sailesh, came to present his work. Then, we went back to Bangkok and had a celebration dinner in seafood restaurant (conference at Pattaya but seafood at Bangkok).

Today (May 11, 09), I have received an email from Prof. Worsak regarding the award I received. I would like to quote it here.

I received good news from Dr Poompat that a paper co-authored with AIT student, Sucha Supittayapornpong received the Best Paper Award at the 2009 6th International Conference on Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications, and Information Technology (or in short ECTI-CON 2009) in Pattaya on Thusday 8 May 2009.

On behalf of SET, I wish to offer my congratulations for this achievement.

I also would like to quote the initial email from Dr. Poompat.

This is just a quick post before I go to bed.

Last week, I run into a course website which is "Network Design and Game Theory." In side, there are many interesting stuffs and, at the bottom, there are resources on how to write a good academic paper and how to give a good academic talk.

They are very useful for me at this moment since I am going to have a presentation on May 7. In fact, I have just finished my presentation slide using some guidelines below.

I use a Burn-up chart to benchmark my performance of writing down and translation of English vocabularies.

This is the result. The x-axis represents time and the y-axis describes a number of vocabularies. It seems that I use approximately 80 seconds for each word. The red line illustrates velocity from every word.

Last week, I came up with an idea for practicing English listening. I went to find "The Last Lecture of Randy Pausch" I had listened before. Originally, I got the link from my lecturer, Aj. Jittat. I then got it in 3gp file, so I can watch it from my mobile phone while I am traveling, e.g., to TOEFL class.

At this time, I can understand contents more than I did before. The more I understand, the more perceptive I get. His lecture was filled with inspiration, encouragement, ambition, positive perspectives. Thus, I like to quote them here in order to remind myself and other who may find them useful.

Impressive Sentences from The DaVinci Code

I have just finished watching The DaVinci Code film. In fact, I saw it once when it first came to theaters. However, at that time, I could not understand completely the movie since I could not follow throughout its subtitle. Even this time I still cannot since I have watched it in English without subtitle. :P

Anyway, there are sentences which I am impressed in the film. And, I just want to quote them here.

At the beginning, in the conference:
"Understanding our past determines actively our ability to understand the present."
"So how do we sift truth from belief?"
"How do we write our own histories, personally or culturally, and thereby define ourselves?
"How do we penetrate years, centuries of historical distortion to find original truth?

When they are examining The Last Supper picture:
"The mind sees what it chooses to see." (scotoma)

In an airplane:
"You and I Robert have observed history. Time has been our glass. We are in history now. Living it. Making it."

I myself really like these sentences because they reminds me to understand myself and our (Thai) history as we still do not really understand the truth (in my opinion). They also encourage me to define and make my present and our nation. This is because we see things as we want to see not what it actually occurs.

Non-Compulsory Class Attendance

This is my last essay given in TOEFL class. In my opinion, this one is better than my previous one, but that is my opinion. :P The essay contains 337 words.

For the same reason as a previous post, I do not put the question in my post.

Non-Compulsory Class Attendance
When people come to study in university, they learn various experiences such as academic life, friends, self understanding, and classes. That is, lecture may not be the only important thing to be learned. In my opinion, attending a class is not compulsory for students for two reasons.

To begin with, students should be encouraged to manage themselves instead of being forced to participate a class. Since college is the last place before the real world, not only knowledge but also self-development are important. For instance, a student will learn responsibility from class attendance if it is not requirements. Consequently, when they work in a company, this skill enhances their rate of promotion. Moreover, having to choose between a lecture and a key player in a final football match, a student can learn to schedule important activities. This expertise is very useful for prioritizing tasks in one's busy hours. From these two examples, leaving the decision to students is a good practice for themselves.

Additionally, the open decision also improves a student's attitude of subject and classroom's atmosphere. This can be seen when a class is unfavorable due to an instructor. In this case, joining the class leads to hatred between the students and the subject. It is better that they avoid the lesson and study by themselves. Besides, if the students must join an undesirable professor's lecture, in the room, they will express their bad feeling to others; then the atmosphere of the classroom will become terrible. However, if the students can decide not to go in the first place, the class's environment will be nice and others interested in the lecture will have a good moment in their study. Thus, the non-compulsory requirement causes advantages to both students and their classmates.

Indeed, class participation should not be imposed as a rule because it affects the students themselves, maturity and attitudes, and their surroundings. In fact, the person who wants to join will definitely come to the class no matter it is compulsory or not.

A question of this essay comes from ETS-Information Bulletin for CBT. I am not sure that I can reproduce it, so I do not put it on my blog. Sorry for that.

Games for Children and Adults
There are many kinds of games humans have invented. Some are specifically for kids while the others are for adults. Regardless of players' age, I myself believe that games serve two essentials advantages to both the teenager and the grown-up.

First, games improve players' mind without a condition of their age. Games require a player to think actively. An example of games is SUDUKU invented in Japan where its population has the highest average IQ in the world. In this game, a player is provided with a 9x9 table and some initial numbers. In order to complete the game, the table must be filled out with unrepeated numbers in every row and column. Consequently, playing this game develops logical thinking since filling one number requires a lot of logical choice elimination. Beside the left side brain as discussed, the right side is also developed by playing such games as jigsaw puzzle. Collecting pieces of jigsaw, a player practices their imagination since mapping a small piece to the original image requires on-the-fly image construction. The aforementioned games are playable for both children and adults.

Furthermore, games, especially multi-player games, are good recreation for children as well as adults. This pastime leads to relax and socialization. For instance, playing crossword requiring many players to line up words from obtained symbols against competitors, people meet and chat to one another while they are playing. Thus, they relax and, at the same time, gaps between players reduce. Additionally, teamwork games such as paint ball, where two teams fight against each other in a simulated battle field, not only enhances cooperation skill but also improves health and stamina. Moreover, they also learn to be good winners and losers. As we can see, both multi-player games are appropriate for everyone.

Indeed, everyone with different ages can enjoy similar benefits from games. Variety of advantages range from mentality, physicality, and also socialization for everyone including kids, children, and adults. Therefore, I cannot find any reason to contradict this fact.

Deficit Spending

This essay is not quite good; however, it is written and I just want to post it. :P The number of words in this essay is 258.

Deficit Spending
Based on the reading and listening information, deficit spending has one advantage. The value occurs when the approach is applied to severe economic atmosphere. The speaker states that the deficit policy stimulates, energizes and stabilizes dreadful economies. One of the examples provided from the reading passage is an exploit of deficit strategy to the Great Depression of the 1930s in America. As a consequence, American economic catastrophe was alleviated and, later on, markets continue to run as well as the more money people gain. In other words, The government spends large amount of money to create demand which leads to huge employment. The more employment is, the more people's income is. At last, people create more demand again and the circulation continues.

On the other hand, even though the speaker agrees with a good side of deficit spending, the method also has two negative points, while the reading passage does not give any. To begin with, use of the method negligently, i.e., when the economy is healthy and its capacity is already maximized, may yield economic crisis. A concrete instance of this result was the static economy of the 1970s. That is, owing to competition among government and private sectors, the resulting economy causes high unemployment, high interest rates, and high inflation. Secondly, if the method involves a loan of foreigner's money, the interest payback will not return to the homeland's economy. This will totally ruin the economy. In short, the deficit strategy has more disadvantages than its positive side and I am convinced to follow the speaker.

Missing Components for DVD-player in Ubuntu 8.10

Yesterday (as today is a new day), I bought two movies, The DaVinci Code: Extended Cut and Sliding Doors. However, I could not manage to play the former when I came to my notebook. At last, I found out that Ubuntu 8.10 did not come out with comprehensive components because some legal reasons. Thus, in order to play DVD using VLC (in my case), Medibuntu (Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu) is needed.

The process of workout (in my way) is to follow process in Medibuntu and part 4/5 of Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto. Thanks to the discussion in DVD Problems--Are you trying to play an encrypted DVD without libdvdcss? for essential information.

Currently, my VLC work well playing The DaVinci Code.

Controversy of William Shakespeare's Literatures

This essay is an English homework from a writing class I am currently taking. I wrote 249 words in this essay.

Controversy of William Shakespeare's Literatures

According to the reading passage, there are three arguments on an authorship of works known to be contributed to William Shakespeare. Those works include famous stories of Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello. Firstly, his education did not match the degree of background knowledge required for composing those works, especially history and geography. Secondly, although those works were very celebrated at his time, there did not exist any discussion record related to him on those works. Lastly, all original manuscripts of those works with his handwriting have not been found until today. From the aforementioned reasons, nowadays, two candidates for those works are Francis Bacon and the Earl of Oxford.

In contrast to the reading paragraph, the speaker strongly states that Shakespeare did create almost all of those works by himself. Firstly, an explanation for the educational requirement is that the knowledge in those compositions may not be real. In other words, in order to generate plays and poems, education level is not an important factor. Furthermore, there exist many records connecting him and those works. To illustrate, the first editions of those plays cited his name as an author. In addition, Robert Greene in 1592 reviewed his works and stated that he was an originator. From these facts, the manuscripts with his photograph and date may not be significant. Finally, the Earl of Oxford died before as many as 12 plays were written. On the other hand, all of the works were created while Shakespeare was alive.

I absolutely concur with FACT, FREEDOM AGAINST CENSORSHIP THAILAND. What I believe is that "They are invading my right and I myself am protecting mine".

As a consequence, I signed the petition (14-12-08 at 13:31) against a blocking produced from Thai government. The following points are what I agree with. Apart from that, you can read a full version of them, which is the FACT's press release (16-11-06).

FREEDOM AGAINST CENSORSHIP THAILAND–NOW!

A distinguished group of academics, journalists, publishers, business owners and parents today formed the Freedom Against Censorship Thailand (FACT) to file a formal petition before the Thai Human Rights Commission asking for a complete ban on Internet censorship in Thailand.

There is no Thai law which permits such blocking, all of which is done in secret. In fact, the 1997 Thai Constitution guarantees unfettered access to all communication, as does the Thai Telecommunications Act. MICT has funded a study from Sukhothai Thammathirat University’s legal faculty to determine how current laws can be used to enforce Internet blocking in order to subvert and undermine the foundation of law enshrined in the Thai Constitution.

The Thai Government conceals a hidden agenda by targeting pornographic websites, the majority of those blocked. At least 11% of websites blocked are critical of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, his Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party, government handling of the violence in southern Thailand and the September 19 coup d’etat.

In addition to keeping this blocklist secret, Thai government agencies also will not disclose their criteria for blocking websites or who, in fact, is making these decisions. Nor will they define what is considered “a threat to national security”. This lack of public transparency is in direct contravention of the Information of Government Act 2540.

Since September 19, MICT is also blocking public discussions in which comments and replies from the public are posted to moderated and unmoderated webboards such as Prachatai, Pantip and Midnight University. Midnight University has already brought their case before the Human Rights Commission and the Administrative Court and was granted an interim injunction to unblock their website pending the Court’s final determination.

The blocking of websites or, in fact, any government censorship of freedom of expression, is most often used by an insecure government in a feeble attempt at control of its citizens. Usually the censorship is directed against views government deems unconventional or unorthodox, if not an outright threat to power, as in Burma or China or North Korea or, in fact, in the USA using its PATRIOT Act. Thailand is not Burma or China or North Korea (yet). Perhaps Aung San Suu Kyi said it best: “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

There are an estimated more than two billion distinct websites, including at least ten million pornographic sites. Is blocking millions of sites A) within the Thai government’s capabilities; B) worth the huge expenditure necessary; or C) just a smokescreen for a far more sinister political agenda?

Internet censorship impacts on academic research, business competition, media freedom, and family education, among many other fundamental rights and freedoms.

The Internet is presently the only forum in which all opinions are equal, neutral and non-commercial. Should not any person judge the validity of those opinions for themselves? We do not believe the World Wide Web should be in any manner curtailed, censored or managed anywhere.

My first paper, "Joint Flow Control Routing and Medium Access Control in Random Access Multi-Hop Wireless Networks," was accepted by IEEE International Conference on Communications, 2009 (IEEE ICC 2009). An notification email said that "Your paper is among the 35% accepted paper from about 3,000 submissions!" :)

This afternoon, while I was checking my email, I found that my second paper, "Joint Flow Control, Routing and Medium Access Control in Random Access Multi-Hop Wireless Networks with Time Varying Link Capacities," had been accepted by Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications and Information Technology Conference, 2009 (ECTI-CON 2009). Owning to ECTI-CON 2009 is not as large as IEEE ICC 2009, the notification email said that "Total ECTI-CON 2009 submission is 459 papers. Technical program committee carefully selected 295 papers with 65% acceptance." Anyway, I am very excited to present my work in this conference and very glad to join it. Moreover, I cannot attend the former conference due to financial problem. :P

After the new year (2009), I came back from my home in Udonthani to AIT again, even I have graduated. I began to work in a research project as a research assistance. The research's title is "Cross Layer Design for Video Transmission in Multi- Hop Wireless Networks," which is funded by Thai Government (RTG).

This project is in an initial stage since it has started in January 1st, 2009. Now, I am studying network coding with help from Dr.Poompat (AIT) and Dr.Wuttipong (KMUT,Thonburi). Currently, I am very happy with this job. I spend almost of the time to read papers and books which relate to network coding, which is a current plan. In fact, I studied briefly about H.264/AVC last week in order to understand higher layer application that will utilize the lower layer services. Anyway, this things is going to be fun (hopefully).

As I am employed from AIT as a staff, I also have my own office, which is in Telecommunications field of study, and this is its picture.

Furthermore, after a January semester start, this room will be available for an office hour of Digital Communications course. The office hour is Tuesday 16:00-17:00, and I will be in the room to answer questions, if there is any.

Letter to the community on MIT finances
November 17, 2008

To the members of the MIT community:
Ambitious forward motion is MIT's signature; we celebrate initiative, innovation, relentless improvement and creative change. Yet as the world's financial markets continue to decline, they forecast a global reduction in resources. In that context, our challenge is clear: together we must chart a financially prudent path forward, but one that sustains and fosters the essential character of MIT.

As we reported in late September at the State of the Institute, MIT has the latitude to approach the current financial realities in a deliberate way, because of three recent significant advances: we begin from a balanced budget, we smooth our endowment payout to distribute the effects of market volatility over several years, and, across the Institute, we have carefully accumulated cash reserves that can buffer a tough economic period. These facts cannot fully insulate us from the chill of the markets, but they do afford us the time to make thoughtful, coordinated choices. Through the fall, we have steadily responded to the rapid economic flux; for example, as market conditions worsened in October, we recognized that delaying the renovation of the W1 residence hall offered an important opportunity to preserve financial flexibility.

Today, as market uncertainty continues, we want to share with you the further steps we will take to reduce spending, while protecting and fostering the creative, dynamic and stimulating environment that defines MIT.

The impact on Institute revenues
The global economic contraction will likely compromise all of the Institute's major revenue streams: endowment, tuition, gifts and research. Market declines have affected even the most diversified portfolios, including MIT's investments, which will reduce the endowment funds available to support our operations. In addition, we anticipate a decline in net revenue from tuition; we will retain our commitment to need-blind admission and need-based undergraduate financial aid even as we expect that some students and their families may feel the weight of new financial difficulties. (Please consult the Financial Aid office for more information). And, while MIT's donors have remained staunchly generous through past downturns, some may now be constrained in their giving. We also expect that pressure on the nation's budget will lead to continued stagnation, if not declines, in federal funding for research. As we plan, we must incorporate all these anticipated revenue reductions.

Planning for financial constraint
The continuing uncertainty about the length and depth of the economic downturn makes accurate predictions impossible. However, we must take action now to plan for a protracted period of financial constraint, while at the same time remaining flexible for a future in which the economy may improve or worsen.

Taking all these factors into account, we can reasonably anticipate the need to decrease spending by about 10-15% over the next two to three years. In the current budget planning cycle for FY10, we will plan for a base budget reduction of 5%. Future years will undoubtedly require additional cuts by all units. As all of you who manage budgets know, achieving a base budget reduction of this magnitude is a very serious exercise; we will tackle it together, through a careful three-year implementation plan, beginning with a number of practical short-term actions.

Practical steps in the short term
In the coming weeks, we will present specific steps to launch the planning process. In the meantime, we encourage each of you to think about the most effective ways we can cut spending while advancing our core strengths in support of MIT's mission.

In the very near term, it obviously makes sense for every part of the Institute to look hard at each expenditure. We must be very cautious in hiring, relating each hire to core needs, and we should take particular care in making decisions that create long-term financial commitments. At present, we do not expect mandated spending cuts for the current fiscal year. However, achieving significant savings this year can help prevent more painful future choices; early savings will compound, so that a dollar saved today gives greater long-term budget relief than one saved a year from now.

Developing a long-term approach together
As we plan for the longer term, given the budget reductions we anticipate for FY11 and beyond, we can and will use this moment to tailor our financial choices to better position the Institute to seize emerging opportunities. To that end, we will set in place a broad, deliberate, inclusive process, in which all branches of the Institute will work together in the coming year to reassess our priorities and the use of our resources.

The past year has included an ambitious and vitally important process of planning for MIT's future; integrating that planning work with new fiscal constraints will make the Institute stronger, more efficient and more effective. The world values MIT for its unrivaled education, pioneering scholarship and real-world innovations. Together, we need to design new operating strategies that draw on more limited financial resources, without sacrificing our values or our mission of world-changing education, research and service.

In approaching this challenge, we have actively consulted with the Academic Council and department heads, as well as with other faculty and administrative leaders. To further define the budget planning process described in this letter, we will continue these discussions. As plans develop and the global situation evolves, we will keep the MIT community involved and up to date.

Letter to the community on Institute budget process
December 11, 2008

To the Members of the MIT community:
We are writing to update you on the Institute's planning process in response to the contracting economy and to the strains we anticipate it will place on our traditional revenue sources.

As outlined in last month's community letter, in anticipation of a decline in our revenues, we plan to reduce General Institute Budget (GIB) expenses by $100-150 million (i.e., 10-15% of the GIB) over the next two to three years. During the past two weeks we have met with the Academic Council and the Academic Department Heads to discuss inclusive collaborative ways to achieve our budget reduction targets. In addition, Chancellor Phil Clay and Vice Chancellor Steve Lerman have met with student leaders to brief them on the situation and solicit their input. These conversations have helped shape a process that includes both near-term and long-term plans.

Near-term
We have asked the leaders of academic and administrative units to plan for fiscal year 2010 (FY'10) budget reductions totaling $50 million (i.e., 5% of the GIB). We have provided each unit with a target budget and will work with them to achieve the required reductions by July 1, 2009. The goal of this near-term process is to explore ways of optimizing the operations within each academic and administrative unit.

Long-term
To meet the long-term target, future years will require additional budget reductions. This financial challenge gives us the rare opportunity to assess how we carry out MIT's mission and to consider ways to make improvements while reducing expenses. For this purpose we will launch an Institute-wide Planning Task Force that will bring together faculty, staff and students to address these goals in an integrated manner.

The Task Force will draw upon the academic planning exercise led by the Deans during the last year. Their work revealed many opportunities for collaborative activities among departments, schools and other units. The Task Force is charged to explore these opportunities and identify new ways to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our operations. We (the provost, the chancellor, and the executive vice president and treasurer) will lead the Task Force, and a coordinating team will oversee planning groups focused on academic, administrative and student life areas.

The Task Force will also explore revenue enhancement opportunities. Given the broad range of topics under review, the Task Force will seek input from our whole community. Task Force members will be announced shortly, and will commence their work this January. The Task Force will focus on recommendations for implementation in FY'11 and FY'12, as well as identify those that could be phased-in in FY'10. The goal of this long-term process is to recommend ways to optimize the operations of the whole Institute.

Communication
We will provide the community with periodic reports from the Task Force and updates from senior Institute officers. We plan to convene the Institute's faculty, administrative and student leaders early in the spring term to discuss innovative ideas for the complex task at hand. We will also reach out to the community by reporting periodically at meetings of the faculty, the Administrative Council, the Administrative/Financial Officer group, UA/GSC and other groups.

To foster an inclusive process, we have created a website (web.mit.edu/institute/budget-planning/) that will serve as a resource in the months ahead. In addition to providing up-to-date information about the Task Force, the site will include all announcements, reports and news related to MIT's budget planning. You may also use the website to submit comments directly to the Task Force. As soon as the Task Force members are announced, we will launch new features on the website to encourage dialogue, share ideas and leverage technology's ability to bring communities together.

We have complete confidence that this opportunity to rethink how we perform our mission will stimulate the innovation and creativity that will result in a much stronger MIT.

Summaries of My Life in Master's Degree

I have got so many things from a life in Master's degree in AIT. They are more than what I expected before I studied. In fact, some of them are higher and some are under my expectation.

Let me start with concrete things.
English language: I have been improving a lot, but it is not fluency. I need to improve it a lot more.
GPA: My GPA is satisfiable for me. It is (hopefully) enough for my PhD. admission.
Thesis: I have got an "excellent" grade for the thesis. I have done the second half part by myself and feel very good. :) (The first part may not be completed without a help from my adviser.)
Publication: I expect one, but I have two. The first one that is the first half of my thesis was submitted to IEEE ICC 2009 (I wish that it will be accepted). The second one which is the second half of my thesis is in preparation for ECTI-CON 2009. I also wish that it will be accepted, so that I will have a real experiment in the real conference.
My field and goal: I think that I know it right now. I want study "Wireless Communication Networking Theory" which may cooperate with "optimization", "game theory". The first part, optimization thery, I have got from my course work and thesis work. The second part will be studied next year as my preparation for PhD admission and my own interest.
Stop using pirate software: All of my thesis parts used legal softwares as my previous post.

For the abstract things:
Feeling of Researching: I think that I have learned (not 100%) how to do research. Definitely, it is difference from studying course works. They are the process, how to think, guess and study deeply, time management, planning, and etc.
Life with Researching: Concentration and addicted. :P
Writing a paper: In my field, we show all results and all limitations without over commercialization. We present actual truths.
Other: More maturity in academic (but need to learn more). What are things that a good adviser and advisee should do.

Next year (2009), I will be a research assistance (RA) in AIT with Dr. Poompat. The full name of the project is "Cross Layer Design for Video Transmission in Multi- Hop Wireless Networks". Apart from the RA works, my plan are,

My Dream Comes Back

I have a dream of explainable network systems with high efficiency. With my current knowledge, the optimization decomposition framework is used to explore my dream, but it has some limitations -- quite a lot.

Nowadays, I have just read two presentations related to my dream. The presentations are Distributed Optimization over Random Networks and Networks' Challenge: Where Game Theory Meets Network Optimization. Well, what I can say is "they are so beautiful".
If I have a chance to follow my dream with Optimization and Network Game Theory, this will be one of the best thing my life.

Next year (2009) is my preparation year before I apply for some unbounded scholars. Look like to follow my dream, I must work so hard, and I WILL DO IT. Now, I have my goal, and will follow it.

PS. I will graduate on 19th December 2008 for master's degree at AIT.

Software Tools for Master Thesis

Time to finalize my thesis comes. Now, I use many tools for my thesis report, so that the report is built and composed legally (from legal softwares).

LaTeX and Tex editor are LaTeX and vim with a script vim-latex.
Raster image editor is InkScape with textext.
Numerical and simulation programs are written by Python with CVXOPT and its required packages.
Optimization solver is performed from Octave.
Presentation slides is planed to be from OpenOffice.
Operating System is Ubuntu 8.04.1.

Thanks to all this softwares. I am going to put them into the acknowledge section of my thesis report. :)

Working with Matrix in Python

I list modules for matrix manipulation in Python.
- NumPy (Numerical Python)
- BLAS (Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms)
- LAPACK (Linear Algebra PACKage)
- CVXOPT (CoVeX OPTimization)

As I know so far, NumPy is has a basic module for matrix manipulation. BLAS operates at a low level provided fast complex operation, by sometime exploit matrix structures. LAPACK includes functions for solving linear equations, matrix factorizations, least-squares and least-norm problems, QR factorization, symmetric eigenvalue problems and singular value decomposition. CVXOPT is a higher layer package. It builds on top of BLAS and LAPACK for convex optimzation problem in which need matrix manipulations. CVXOPT and NumPy are compatible with each other.

After spend all my noon today, at last, I have build it! :)

Some one says the package from synaptic, Python package for convex optimization (0.9.3-1), work without any additional works, see here. However, this does not happen with me.

Then, I attempted to build the CVXOPT 1.0 from scratch.
I downloaded CVXOPT 1.0.
Then, I collect all dependency package:
- atlas3-base, libatlas3gf-3dnow, libatlas3gf-base, libatlas3gf-sse, libatlas3gf-sse2, libatlas-headers
- libblas3gf, libblas-dev, liblapack3gf, liblapack-dev, refblas3
- libgsl0-dev, libgsl0ldbl, gsl-bin
- libfftw3-3, libfftw3-dev
- libglpk0, libglpk-dev
- dsdp, libdsdp-5.8gf, libdsdp-dev.

For me, there was an error with gfortran. Therefore I install additional packages.
sudo apt-get build-dep python-cvxopt
sudo apt-get install gfortran

After extract the CVXOPT package, since I want to build with all options, I edit setup.py in /src by setting:
BUILD_GSL = 1
BUILD_FFTW = 1
BUILD_GLPK = 1
BUILD_DSDP = 1.
DSDP_INC_DIR = '/usr/include/dsdp'
base = Extension('base', libraries = ['gfortran', 'm', 'lapack', 'blas'],

After I made it work, I just found this building CVXOPT on different platforms. Perhaps, this precedure is better. However, I will not say that my procedure is the best, but it works well for me. :)

Network Simulator 3

I just find out today that the Network Simulator 3 (NS3) is available currently. It is written in C++ and Python. Since I study Python 1 week ago, this means there is nothing that I waste from studying Python. :D

There is also an overview slide provided at its webside.

One of important things is its non-backward compatibility between its previous version, NS2.

However, I do not use it right now. I am going to use it next year for my research work.

- Basic control flows are: if, for, while, break, continue, with ... in.
- It embeds Lambda.
- For a big program, script file, which called module, can be created. To use modules uses import.
- Package is a structured modules.
- To keep Python's data in file, pickle commands from pickle module are provied, pickle.dump(), pickle.load().
- Exception is a class. A baseclass can except the except clause of its derived class.
- All operations that introduce new names in local scope are name binding, e.g., import, function definitions.
- A class has two types of attribute: data and object function.
- Every class function has its first argument, self.
- Class constructure is __init__ .
- Class private variables use specific naming, at least two leading underscores, at most one trailing underscore. (i.e. __name, name_)
- Generator is a tool for creation of iterator.

I have modified an AIT LaTeX template for my thesis report. The old versions come from many sources: Waheed Noor (I see this name in the old version code), Kaan (CS) and Tubtim (TC). As I follow the code, I find that someone tried to create the template since 198x.

What I have done are:
- Cleaned and reorganized the code. (I wish that it is.)
- Wrote script commands for AIT citation styles, i.e., \AITcite and \AITciteA.
- Modified the layouts of Table of Contents, List of Figures, List of Tables.
- Created Appendix pages with supporting cross-references. (I wish that it is bug free.)
- Created List of Abbreviations and List of Symbols.
- Some small additional modifications.

Comments:
- For the cover page, I follow AIT's example.
- If there are some bugs, please let me know. (If I have time, I will try to solve it.)
- My AIT email valid until December 2008. Therefore, any comments or suggestion can be sent to me by commenting this BLOG.
- Hope that it is useful.

This tutorial is very good. Not only teaching you the language but also the coding style.

* Use 4-space indentation, and no tabs.
4 spaces are a good compromise between small indentation (allows greater nesting depth) and large indentation (easier to read). Tabs introduce confusion, and are best left out.

* Wrap lines so that they don’t exceed 79 characters.
This helps users with small displays and makes it possible to have several code files side-by-side on larger displays.

* Use blank lines to separate functions and classes, and larger blocks of code inside functions.

* When possible, put comments on a line of their own.

* Use docstrings.

* Use spaces around operators and after commas, but not directly inside bracketing constructs: a = f(1, 2) + g(3, 4).

* Name your classes and functions consistently; the convention is to use CamelCase for classes and lower_case_with_underscores for functions and methods. Always use self as the name for the first method argument (see A First Look at Classes for more on classes and methods).

* Don’t use fancy encodings if your code is meant to be used in international environments. Plain ASCII works best in any case.

Ubuntu 8.04.1 comes with tp_smapi and hdaps_ec (the renamed hdaps), so we do not need to install these modules. However, to enable the active protection system (hard disk parking), we need to do something more.

Installing daemon and utilities:

$ sudo apt-get install hdapsd hdaps-utils

Adjust the configuration daemon for your hard disk device:

$ sudo vim /etc/default/hdapsd

For IDE:
DISK="hda"
For SATA:
DISK="sda"

Add the necessary modules in the list that is loaded after boot:

Install MBR on Flash drive by using lilo

From the previous posted on Portable OS: Ubuntu on Flash Drive, I had used grub for creating MBR on a flash drive; however, it does not work.

Now, I can make it works by using lilo.

First, getting lilo:
sudo apt-get install lilo

Then install MBR to the flash drive (change "sdx" to your flash drive device):
lilo -M /dev/sdx

Note that you can check your flash drive device by command:
sudo fdisk -l
Then looking for your flash device, for an example:

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 * 1 488 3917792+ c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

In this case (the flash drive is 4GB), your "sdx" is "sdc".

All steps are done in Terminal, so open a terminal in Accessories/Terminal.

To extract the file:

Portable OS: Ubuntu on Flash Drive

I had bought a 4 GByte flash drive last Sunday. In fact, 1-2 GByte is enough for me. However I design to install Ubuntu 8.04 into it, so I need at least 2 GByte for OS which are 750 MByte for core OS and 1+ GByte for Applications.

I install Ubuntu 8.04 in persistent mode by following instruction from USB Ubuntu 8.04 Persistent install via the Live CD with my modification. Since in the link, it intents to install OS without leaving a room for data storage. Also I have already used Ubuntu as my primary OS.

Therefore my partitions are:
1-Primary 1.96 GByte : usbdrive //data storage
2-Primary 750 MByte : ubuntu8 //ubuntu 8.04 OS
3-Primary 1+ GByte : casper-rw //configuration and application of OS.

I put the data storage partition at the first partition because Windows can see only the first primary partition, as I have known. So, ordinary Windows can still use it as a normal flash drive and this also hide other partitions (from Windows).

I design to install Ubuntu in persistent mode. Such that, I can save system configurations and install some important softwares such as Octave, Vim, Python (already come with OS), etc.

After the first boot, I came to know that a computer does not recognize this usb drive as bootable media. Then I have to install Master Boot Record (MBR) to my usb drive.

After installation MBR, it work well on my laptop. However I had tested it with old PC at my department and it does not work. I will try on other new computers as well. Anyway, I will work it out when I have a time.

Avoid deep discharges except when resetting fuel gauge or reconditioning a battery; partial dis-/recharges are better for the battery lifetime (note: fuel gauge will slowly get inaccurate over time)

Remove battery when on AC (due to heat)

Avoid exposing the battery (or notebook) to excessive heat

Charging

Avoid charging if battery is nearly full, unless you will need its full capacity soon; keep it on the 30%-85% charged range

Keep notebook off while charging due to heat

Fully discharge, then fully charge battery when needed to recalibrate fuel gauge; newer battery pack models require this less often, old ones might need it as often as every 30 cycles

Storage

Never fully charged or discharged, ideally at about 40%

Cool and dry, but do not freeze them: 10-15C is recommended

Now I come to the third semester of Master's program at AIT. For this semester, I have to find my thesis topic and work around it until I graduate. As I had talked to my adviser, my pre-final topic is the
"Cross-layer Congestion Control, Routing and Medium Access Control
Optimization on Wireless Ad hoc Networks".

Rather than papers which I have to read, I also have to study books (at this moment).
- Nonlinear Programming
- Game Theory
- Convex Optimization

Also one big paper which I assemble it to a little book (~50 pages), "Layering as Optimization Decomposition A Mathematical Theory of Network Architectures". It is about a new concept of Network Architectures. I will write about it in more detail later when I finish reading it. However, as I can say right now, it is very interesting and may change a viewing of network system in the future. Who knows?
